The advantage of consecutive interpretation is that it is cheaper than simultaneous interpretation because it is performed by one interpreter, working in one language pair without any equipment. It also has a disadvantage, because it slows down communication and breaks up the thought process of the speaker.
Simultaneous interpreting not only saves time, it also has a prestige value, which makes it the ideal way of communication selected by our clients in relation to prominent participants.
Certain technical equipment is required for simultaneous interpreting. It is known as interpretation equipment, e.g., interpreters’ booth, headphones, etc. If required, we can also assist you with the equipment.
Very often the chuchotage interpreting is also classified as simultaneous interpreting. With that method, the interpreter performs simultaneous interpretation for one or two persons without any interpretation equipment. On these occasions, only one or two people listen to the particular target language. As its name suggests, during shooshootage interpretation the interpreter sits next to the respective members of audience and whispers the translation of the speaker’s presentation in the target language into their ears. The shooshootage interpretation has a disadvantage; the privacy of the parties is violated because they must sit very close to each other in order to hear the translation beside the sound system and information may be lost because the work conditions of the interpreter do not match the conditions of an interpreter’s booth.
We recommend shooshootage interpreting only in extraordinary situations.
